INTERVIEW SUBJECTS

Below are several of the many possible interview subjects who will hopefully be interviewed for “Anne of Japan”:

  • Yuko Katsura, Professor of Literature at the University of Hiroshima, and author of the article “Red Haired Anne in Japan” in Canadian Children’s Literature issue #34, 1984, can discuss Lucy Maud’s literary qualities and the resistance she has encountered among “professors of Shakespeare and Chaucer forced to supervise [university students who choose to write theses on “Anne of Green Gables”] because of a lack of specialists among their colleagues.”
  • Dr. Clare Fawcett, director of the English Summer Immersion program at the University of Prince Edward Island.
  • Sonja Arntzen, Professor of Japanese Literature at the University of Toronto -Representative of Shincho-Sha in Tokyo, publisher of the Anne books into Japanese.
  • Mie Miki, granddaughter of Hanako Muraoka (the translator of “Anne of Green Gables” into Japanese in 1954), she made a TV special about her grandmother and L.M. Montgomery.
  • Citizens of Ashibetsu, on their past as a mining town, in contrast to their attempts to build a successful theme park.
  • Jiro Oishi, project co-ordinator of Ashibetsu Canadian World.
  • Members of “Buttercups” and “Anne’s Clan”, fan clubs.
  • Kiyomi Matsufuji, the proprietor of Anne’s Academy in Kyushu.
  • Students of English immersion courses offered every summer on Prince Edward Island, overwhelmingly populated by young Japanese women.
  • A Japanese-speaking employee of the C.P. Hotel in Charlottetown, which offers (according to their publicity) a special “Anne dinner” as well as “enjoyable time with ‘Anne.’” [Yuka Takahashi, CP Hotels’ Atlantic sales manager for Japan.]
  • Junzo Miyatake, assistant English professor in a Yokohama college.
  • Japan-Prince Edward Island Society
  • Yuka Kajihara, a librarian working in Toronto and organizer of the Kindred Spirits magazine and website, a clearinghouse of all things Japanese and Anne.
  • Yuko Matsumoto, novelist.
